The Sierra Club was founded in 1982 by a group of Californians who wanted to sponsor wilderness outings. The first president of the club was John Muir and he became very soon involved in nature conservation through political action.

 

Throughout the Early 20th century, the club had built several trails, park buildings as well as opposing damming and grazing on public lands, and they supported the establishment of the National Park Service. In the midst of the 20th century, the Sierra Club's efforts were mainly focused on the Pacific and Midwest but it had eventually expanded to offices in Washington D.C.

 

Sierra club was eventually established as a charitable foundation with  club chapters in all 50 states. Currently, it is one of the largest non grass root organizations in the U.S. today, and it continues to expand its efforts for nature conservation.
